Almost never. The double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and protects the skin from sun. Shaving can permanently damage coat regrowth. Manage summer with early walks, shade, cooling mats, and thorough undercoat raking instead.

Twice a year (typically spring and fall) double-coated breeds shed their undercoat in dense clumps over two to four weeks. It is not a health problem — it is a scheduling problem. Daily line-brushing with an undercoat rake during the blow keeps it manageable.
